The pristine waters that flow from its spring continue to nourish the area, providing fresh, clear water year-round. Upon arrival, we begin our trek at the shores of the Lake of Zaros, a serene spot that is the starting point of the famous E4 trail, one of Europe’s most well-known long-distance paths. 

The Path through Agios Nikolaos Gorge We follow the trail into the Gorge of Agios Nikolaos, a place where water flows freely, carving its way through the landscape. Along the path, we’ll walk beside the riverbed, passing multiple waterfalls and natural ponds. The sound of rushing water and the lush surroundings will immerse you in the beauty of Crete’s unique ecosystems. 

The Holly Forest of Rouvas After approximately 2 hours (5 km) of hiking, we arrive at the Holly Forest of Rouvas, a unique and protected ecosystem of holly trees that are of national significance. Here, nature’s magic unfolds around us as we enter this enchanting, ancient forest – a place where time seems to stand still. 

A Rest at Ai Giannis At Ai Giannis, a beautifully landscaped picnic area awaits, offering a welcome break. You’ll find a mountain shelter, toilets, benches, and a fresh spring, perfect for a snack and a moment of relaxation. This is a great spot to take in the surrounding natural beauty and catch your breath before deciding how to continue. 

The Choice: Continue or Return At this point, you’ll have two options:  Continue to Dyo Prini: A stunning viewpoint where you can admire breathtaking panoramas of the Rouvas Forest, Zaros, and the vast Messara Plain.  Return to Zaros Lake: If you prefer a shorter hike, you can return the way we came and enjoy the calmness of the lake once again.
