The Historic Lassithi Plateau – Land of Windmills and Zeus Our journey begins at the picturesque Tzermiado village, nestled in the heart of Lassithi Plateau. This area, renowned for its iconic windmills, was once one of Europe’s first wind farms during the 1950s and 1960s, with up to 13,000 windmills scattered across the plateau. These windmills were used by local farmers to pump water from the underground reservoirs to irrigate their crops. But Lassithi is not just famous for its windmills—according to Greek mythology, it is also the birthplace of Zeus, the mighty King of the Gods. As you trek through this historic land, the air is thick with ancient stories and legends.
The Hike to the Summit of Mount Karfi We begin our ascent on an uphill cement road that leads us to the stunning Nissimos plateau, where the official trail to the summit of Mount Karfi begins. The hike is easy to moderate, with plenty of opportunities to stop and admire the surrounding scenery. Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by rugged beauty, with distant views of the Selena Mountains and the Dikti Mountain range.
The Summit: Ruins and Panoramic Views At the summit, you’ll find the ruins of an ancient Minoan settlement. Once a thriving community, these ancient stones whisper stories of the past. From the top, enjoy panoramic views that stretch across the north coast of Crete, the lush mountains of Selena and Dikti, and the expansive Aposelemi Dam. It’s a moment to take in the grandeur of Crete’s natural beauty and reflect on the rich history beneath your feet.
The Descent: An Ancient Mule Path Our descent takes us down a different route, following an old rocky mule path that once served as the main trail for traders and locals. This ancient path, winding through the rugged landscape, will bring us back to Tzermiado village, completing our journey through the heart of Lassithi.
